Getting involved in the creative process and learning from artists is both fun and informative for people with disabilities. This involvement is important to contribute to meaning-making and the benefits of deep engagement with art. The spaces I chose to include on my Tour offer a wide range of opportunities and access to experience art. Being physically accessible can be a comfort, helping to reduce the mental effort needed to explore. Make at Rosie, The Workshop and Broad Studios have creative multi-sensory exploration. VISTA, our low vision support group, is interested in 3D printing and how to incorporate it with real-life applications, so this will be a great way to explore that.
ACC has made great use of their space and their creative programs are hidden gems.
The Carver is easy to get to and is a fantastic resource for connecting us with the African American contributions to Austin’s history which has shaped our community.
SAGE Studio & Gallery is a non-profit art space in east Austin that provides artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities the materials, space, and support to produce, exhibit, and sell their artwork. It is SAGE Studio’s mission to nurture and amplify the voices of artists with disabilities, so that they may meaningfully engage with the social, economic, and creative life of the community.
Unboredroom promotes the inclusion of people with and without disabilities through the arts and recreation. Unboredroom’s year-round programming includes collaborative art-making workshops and exhibitions, adaptive seasonal events like Friendsgiving, Pal-entine’s Day, the Pi Day Paddle, and community outreach like mobile sensory tents, classes, educational panels, and more.
Broad Studios Club House is an educational ceramic studio in the heart of east Austin. We offer classes, Date Nights, memberships, workshops, private events, and more. Community is at the heart of everything we do. We believe in the power of art to bring people together; fostering connections, friendships, and a sense of belonging.
The Workshop is a creative space that hosts art classes, training events, retreats, and community experiences for play and connection. It was begun as a center for art therapy training, but has expanded beyond that original scope while maintaining a commitment to honoring the role of art in healing.
Make at Rosie is a community makerspace in Austin, built for women, nonbinary makers, and allies. We teach hands-on skills across textiles, print, jewelry, and more, and run open studio hours where members work side by side. Our founders, Cat and Clairissa, built the space to make tool training and craft accessible without gatekeeping. We show up on the Tour as a working studio and a gathering place for makers at every skill level.
