“There’s a myth about old Austin. Weird Austin, neon Austin, Austin full of good-timers, kooks and people just wanting to make music and dance a bit. As an outsider people are always reminiscing to me about this, and I’m always looking. Past the laptops in cafes, past the Waymos, past the $13 beers. It’s there, you just gotta look for the signs.” Originally from New Zealand, Monique has been painting in Austin for a couple years now, the bars, the parking lots, the Honky Tonks. Working mostly in acrylic on wood, she is interested in storytelling and themes of place and nostalgia.
